Broadneck - By WENDI WINTERS, For The Capital On Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend, when most of us were grilling hot dogs or shopping for that holiday favorite, the Arnold Volunteer Fire Department was out in force outside the Bay Hills Super Fresh. To the delight of youngsters, firefighters handed out child-size fire helmets, gave tours of their rig, answered questions and spread their life-saving messages of fire safety, awareness and prevention. For the second year in a row, to show their appreciation for the group, Super Fresh employees like Paul Rashad, Paul Mueller and Nicola Hardesty grilled and sold hot dogs to passersby to raise funds for the firefighters and paramedics. Vendors got into the act, too. Nathan's donated the hot dogs. Schmidt's Bakery, Herr's Snacks and Coke and Pepsi bottlers also provided products. A few days later, after totaling the results, Super Fresh manager Jerry Usilton handed fire department Capt. Chuck Kennedy and firefighters Randy Hopkins, Matt Schroeder and Heather Green an oversize check for $638. "It's a small token, guys, but you guys are our total heroes," he said.
